Urban planning
You tackle the following challenges:
That's how you do it
Good city planning takes time. After all, you cannot build the necessary infrastructure overnight. That is why the effect of this measure in the short term is still limited, and you should mainly look at the long-term results. In general, the concentration of pollutants is greater in sprawling cities than in compact cities. Well-organized public transport and encouraging active transport are therefore important means of controlling the demand for transport within urban planning. This is closely linked to infrastructural and green measures.
The effect of urban planning on air pollution is qualitative rather than quantitative. Both real data and simulations have shown that vast urban areas tend to suffer from higher concentrations and higher emissions of air pollutants. In Curitiba (Brazil), estimates show that careful urban planning, coupled with improved public transport, can reduce traffic-related pollutant emissions by 16%.
