Limit as much local heavy traffic in your area as possible
Heavy vehicles such as trucks and buses often cause more pollution. The legislation in Flanders makes it possible to impose specific restrictions, such as for vehicles heavier than 3.5 tons.
You tackle the following challenges:
That's how you do it
Ask your city or municipality if there is a heavy traffic policy, and if so, what that policy consists of.
Heavy traffic has a major impact on the environment. It results in more particulate matter and nitrogen oxides, noise pollution, vibrations that reduce the quality of life, road safety — even a disproportionate amount — and road maintenance.
On the other hand, this heavy traffic increases the accessibility of people and goods. In many cases there are alternatives, such as:
- urban distribution centers,
- replacement of large, not optimally filled trucks with small and environmentally friendly vehicles in the center of a city,
- easily accessible collection points for customers,
- temporary warehouses for building materials for ' just in time ' delivery
- transport by water,
- promote official truck parking area
- free park-and-rides and from there easily to the center with a tram, bus, (shared) bicycle or (free) shuttle bus.
