Calls for a reduction of the speed limit on highways
Imposing a fixed or variable lower speed limit for traffic will reduce air pollution.
You tackle the following challenges:
That's how you do it
- Route control ensures a lower average speed, a smoother flow and a higher road safety.
- Route control is less suitable for ring roads because many lane changes take place there. To perform this safely, speed differences between the various road users are necessary.
- In the event of a smog alarm, a maximum speed of 90 km/h already applies in Flanders on highways near village centers and residential areas. A speed reduction can also be considered on other roads.
- Smart traffic lights and green waves ensure less start and stop traffic and therefore reduce the higher emissions.
- Smart traffic lights respond dynamically and flexibly to the current traffic situation, so that fewer cars are unnecessarily standing in front of a traffic light and therefore produce all kinds of emissions. The lights can also be adjusted for the benefit of pedestrians and cyclists.
